Uniting and representing the industry

The American Whiskey landscape is diverse. It encompasses companies of all sizes across the country and a variety of categories. It is quickly expanding with a growing number of new distillers.

We aspire to bring the entire American Whiskey industry together, including local associations and state guilds, supply chain partners, and distillers of all sizes to act as the leading voice for American Whiskey globally.

The American Whiskey Association represents the entire industry, engaging with key national and global stakeholders to ensure it achieves its global vision, purpose and ambition.

Market access

Adult consumers around the world should be able to discover and enjoy American Whiskey’s unique craft and character. By allowing American Whiskey products to access to global markets and achieving fair competition in those markets, we ensure that our American distilleries can thrive and benefit local economies.

The American Whiskey Association has set the following priorities:

  • Monitor market access risks and opportunities globally
  • Contribute to advocacy efforts aiming to ensure that American Whiskey is treated fairly in the marketplace without any discrimination on access, regulation or tax vs. other categories.
  • Engage in global trade debates and address tariff and non-tariff trade barriers alongside other trade organizations

Definitions & standards

Maintaining full consumer confidence in American Whiskey’s authenticity, provenance and quality is paramount to sustain the category’s growth momentum.

We believe that rigorous standards, definitions, and geographic indications are needed to make sure consumers recognize the ‘American Whiskey’ name as a symbol of quality and craftsmanship.

We work with global stakeholders to secure and protect American Whiskey standards and definitions globally, working in the following areas:

  • Mapping areas where American Whiskey is not appropriately protected by creating and maintaining a library of Geographic Indications & definitions data
  • Identifying ongoing and future trade deals that could pose risks to the integrity of the category
  • Actively contributing to regulatory discussions on American Whiskey industry standards & definition globally in conjunction with other associations
  • Developing monitoring capability to identify potential infringement to category definitions and Geographic Indications
  • Supporting the creation of regional identities
